Net 4:   Catching our first catfish

Leader: Malachi             Team: Joshua, Christa, Esther

After much anticipation we caught our first catfish! He was a whopper at over 200mm long.
No one wanted to hold him but we did take him back to school so the other students could see him.
As he is a PEST to our beautiful lakes he has been frozen, the most humane way to kill a catfish.

Being able to share what we know with others, older students supporting our younger students and providing and promoting collaboration is what Tuakana Teina learning is all about.

Today we caught an endangered long finned eel or TUNA.
They swim all the way to Tonga to lay their eggs and can crawl across land to find water. Lazaeah

Toitu te whenua, Toitu te roto - Care for our land, care for our lakes.
Rotorua Catfish Killaz came to our school to help us identify the different species of animals that live in our local lakes. Each child was given a free bag, t-shirt, boat key floaty, stickers and key chain advertising how we can stop the spread of catfish pests. 🐟 🐟
